Teen Driver Technologies

Learning how to drive is an incredibly exciting time in any teenager’s life. It can be a little bit scary for Mom and Dad as they grab the handles in the door frame for dear life. With Teen Driver technologies, you might not need to grab the handles so tightly and can help instill good driving habits in your young driver.

What is Teen Driver?

Teen driver is a system built in to many GM vehicles that allows parents to assign one of the key fobs (up to 8 fobs can be assigned) as a Teen Driver. This system can be customized to limit the audio and speed volumes, and create speed warnings. Additionally, by activating a Teen Driver many safety features are defaulted to on and can not be turned off (and their activation becomes part of the available report).

What Does The In-Vehicle Report Show?

When a Teen Driver key is activated, a report is generated so parents can monitor how the driver is performing. This report is only available in-vehicle and is pin protected. With the report, you can see kilometres travelled, over speed warnings, wide open throttles (how often the accelerator pedal was floored), and when certain systems were triggered (such as abs, traction control, forward collision alert, forward automatic braking, reverse automatic braking, tailgating alert or stability control if applicable). This report will continue to store data until it’s reset or the maximum count is exceeded. The maximum is 64,300 kilometres for distance driven when Teen Driver is activated and 1,000 recorded event counts.

What Setting Can I Customize?

When setting up the Teen Driver, you can customize the following:

  • Audio Volume Limit - this will limit the volume of any media played through the vehicle’s speakers.
  • Sirius XM Station filter - this setting will prevent the driver from listening to explicit content on Sirus XM (if equipped).
  • Speed Warnings - these can be set up for speeds between 65 and 120 km/h and will display a message and sound a chime when the driver exceeds that speed.
  • Speed Limited - this is customizable in the sense that it can be turned on or off, but the max speed is 136 km/h if activated.
    • Some vehicles may have the “Acceleration Limiting” setting that is automatically turned ON when the Speed Limiter setting is turned ON. When this setting is applied, acceleration will be limited to reasonable ranges. The teen will see an “Acceleration Limited” message appear in the driver information centre  when they start the vehicle
  • Buckle to Drive - Available on some vehicles, this will prevent the driver from sifting into drive for 20 seconds if their seatbelt is not fastened.

What Setting Can Not be Customized?

The following safety features are defaulted to on when the Teen Driver key is in use (if equipped). These features can not be turned off, and in some cases, their activation will show up in the in-vehicle report.

  • Antilock Brake System (ABS)
  • Daytime Running Lamps/ Automatic Light Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front and Rear Parking Assist
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control

The Super Cruise driver assistance feature is always disabled (if equipped and supported) when Teen Driver is in use. The Speed Warning setting in the instrument panel will also be unavailable when Teen Driver is in use.

Other features that are always active include:

  • The radio (or any streaming media device paired with the vehicle) is muted until the driver and front-seat passengers buckle their seat belts.
  • When the vehicle is low on fuel, the low fuel light on the instrument cluster flashes and the low fuel warning message cannot be dismissed.
  • The driver cannot disable any active safety warnings or alerts, such as Forward Collision Alert, when Teen Driver is active. If any of these alerts were disabled before Teen Driver was used, Teen Driver will turn them on.

How to Activate Teen Driver

If your vehicle is equipped with this feature, you will see an option in the driver information center to set up a key fob. You can set up any vehicle key fob as a Teen Driver key fob.

To register a key fob, use the following steps:

  1. While the vehicle is on and in PARK, select “Teen Driver” from the vehicle’s Settings menu
  2. Create a four-digit PIN. This helps prevent the driver from changing the settings or deleting the report card data
  3. Select either “Key Registration” or “Setup Keys” (depending on the infotainment system) and follow the on-screen prompts
  4. If the vehicle has available Keyless Open and Start, place fob in the pocket designed for it. Check the Owner’s Manual for the location of this pocket in the vehicle. Depending on your vehicle, it can be in the centre console cupholder, centre console bin or underneath the bottom mat of the centre console bin among other locations.
  5. You will now be able to adjust the customizable settings to your preference.

How to Deactivate Teen Driver And Unregister A Key

You can either unregister one key, or unregister all keys and pins.

To unregister one key, select either “Key Registration” or “Setup Keys” (depending on the infotainment system) and follow the on-screen prompts to unregister the key.  To unregister all keys and clear the pin, select the “Clear All Teen Keys/PIN.”

What is the Silverado Z71 Package?

Silverado 1500 with Z71

If you are watching a Chevrolet Silverado cruise down the street, you might have noticed some letting at the front of the truck right by the side view mirrors. The big bold Z71 lettering may be easy to spot, but the additions of this package might not be as easy to find. Here are the 2021 Silverado 1500 Z71 package details.

Let’s start with the different ways you can not order it:

  • With the 2.7L Turbo engine.
  • Max Trailering Package.
  • 22” wheels.
  • The Custom, Custom Trail Boss, or LT Trail Boss trims.
  • The High Country Delux package.

That leaves us with the Work Truck, LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country that the Z71 package can be ordered with, additionally, the truck must be 4WD which is understandable when you consider what this package includes:

  • Off-road suspension.
  • Hill descent control.
  • Skid plates.
  • Heavy-duty air filter.

Those are the standard features that will be added to each of the 5 trims, there are also a couple of extra add-ins that will only be added at select trim levels, such as:

  • Hard badge [Work Truck, LT, RST, and LTZ]
  • Locking Differential [Work Truck, LT, and RST]
  • Dual Exhaust [LT, RST, and LTZ]
  • 2-speed transfer case [LT, RST, and LTZ]
  • 18” black wall tires [LT, RST, LTZ]
  • 18” silver-painted wheels [LT and RST]

Silverado 2500 with Z71 package

Silverado 2500

While the badging may read the same, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 has a slightly different take on the Z71 package. To begin with, the 2500 only offers 5 trims instead of the 1500’s 8. This means the Z71 package is technically available on more trims than the 1500, however, the Silverado 2500 Custom is still not eligible for the package.

Other similarities between the HD truck and the LD include having some features that are available to each trim, and some features that are only added to select trims. Standard features of this package include

  • Off-road suspension with off-road tuned twin tube Rancho shocks.
  • Hill descent control.
  • Skid plates (transfer case and oil pan).

Select features include:

  • 17” black wall tires [Work Truck and LT]
  • Black grille with Z71 logo [LT]
  • Chrome grille insert with Z71 logo [LTZ]
  • Z71 fender badge replaces 4x4 decals [Work Truck, LT, LTZ]

The 2500’s version of the Z71 package still requires that the truck be equipped with 4x4, the one restriction is that the package can not be ordered with pickup box delete.

Silverado 3500

The Silverado 3500 is again different from the other two trucks while maintaining the same badging. At the 3500 level, there are only 4 trims with Custom being dropped from the lineup. This means that you can get the Z71 package at every trim level. Again, the vehicle must be ordered as 4X4 to get the Z71 treatment.

Standard features include:

  • Off-road suspension with off-road-tuned twin tube Rancho shocks.
  • Hill descent control.
  • Skid plates (transfer case and oil pan).

Features specific to different trim levels include:

  • Z71 fender badge replaces 4x4 decals [Work Truck, LT, LTZ]
  • Black grille with Z71 logo [LT]
  • Chrome grille insert with Z71 logo [LTZ]

The LTZ package can not be ordered with either dual rear wheels or pickup box delete.

Announcing an All-Electric Chevrolet Silverado

April 3, 2021 might have been a big day for the highly anticipated Hummer EV SUV, but if you are a truck fan, specifically a Chevrolet Silverado fan, April 6th might be what you were looking for. There wasn’t quite the same fanfare the way there is for a super truck, but there was still lots of news to get excited about.

Late last year the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plan underwent a renaming to Factory Zero. The name was chosen to represent GM’s vision for a future that has Zero crashes, Zero emissions, and Zero congestion. It wasn’t just a renaming though, it has also been a huge investment into an electric future with the plant undergoing serious renovations to be able to accommodate the suite of new electric vehicles being added to the GM lineup.

This plant will build four very impressive vehicles. We knew the Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle, and GM Hummer EV Truck would be built at this plant. Although it wasn’t announced until today, it was no surprise that the Hummer EV SUV would be joining its stablemate and sharing a factory of assembly. The newest addition to be built at this factory is something we haven’t even seen before: an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado.

Currently, the Chevrolet Silverado is built in Fort Wayne, Indiana and the Silo assembly plant in Mexico. The newest Silverado promises to be unlike anything you have seen before without compromising on the qualities that make a Silverado special.

To truly do a truck justice that will be just as capable in the hands of commercial customers as it will be in the hands of a retail customer, you can’t simply add a couple of batteries between the rails. GM knows this, which is why it is being designed from the ground up.

We don’t know everything yet, this wasn’t the electric Silverado’s reveal to the world in the traditional sense, but more of a tease of what we can get excited for. Here is what we do know:

  • The Ultium battery technology will power this new Silverado
  • It will have a GM estimated range of 400 miles on a full charge

That may not be much to go on, but with 100 years of truck leadership and a promise to deliver a vehicle that is as innovative as you expect and possibly more capable than you can currently dream of, it’s a promising first step.

We will keep this page updated as we learn more about the all-electric Silverado in the coming months.
