With the world premiere of the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu at the Shanghai Auto Show just six days away, General Motors chose to begin production about four months ahead of schedule.

The fully-redesigned sedan will roll off the assembly line starting in January 2012, as opposed to May. Dealers will have it in their showrooms shortly after.

The news was confirmed by a company spokesman, Dave Darovitz, and fulfils CEO Dan Akerson's wish for accelerated product launches.

"Since Mr. Akerson came aboard, he's challenging us to move faster and this is the latest example," Darovitz said, adding that the automaker took advantage of greater manufacturing flexibility at its factories and efficiencies built into its global platform.

The GM official declined to pinpoint a market release date, however.

After Shanghai, Chevrolet will display the 2013 Malibu at the New York International Auto Show (April 22-May 1), where it will make its North American debut.
